At head of election 2011, the Liberian political ground shaking considerably as politicians, political groupings as well as ordinary voters are crossing over from one party to another at head of the 2011 election.
The latest is a group of ruling Unity Party youth wing members who have entered into loyalty commitment to securing a membership with the opposition Liberty Party in it bids to win elections this year.
At a well attended program held at the Liberty Party headquarters on the Old Road in Monrovia, Tuesday, over 50 youth wing members representing 150 of their colleagues from the ruling Unity party led by the former Acting National Youth Wing Coordinator Roland Giddings and Mr. Johnny C. Sargbeh, Jr. joined the opposition Liberty Party.
They indicated that their action is triggered by suppression, failed promises, massive dismissal under the so-call “rightsizing” policy. These conditions, they say, “have caused us to bid farewell to the ruling Unity Party of Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf”.
Mr. Giddings told the gathering that their move to the opposition Liberty Party will set the ruling party on a political fire to prove that the larger Liberian society has since lost interest in the party and its standard-bearer’s second term bid.
Mr. Giddings who said he replaced Mr. Eric Smith as National Youth Wing Coordinator of the Unity Party took the decision after resigning his post within the UP along with the former National Coordinator for Mobilization and Recruitment, Mr. Johnny C. Sargbeh Jr. of the same party.
The two men said they were able to rally over 150 youth from the Unity party to give their support to Cllr. Charles W. Brumskine and the Liberty Party in the 2011 elections.
Speaking at the occasion, Liberty Party Vice Chairman for Operation, Jaygbeh Kollie, said the influx of members from every sector of the Liberian society including the ruling Unity Party shows that things were now working in the direction of the opposition Liberty Party which he said was well equipped to provide leadership for the people of Liberia.
Welcoming the new partisans of Liberty Party, Mr. Kollie said the former UP partisans took the right decision to escape the ruling Unity Party because by holding onto UP membership, they would have remained under suppression and bondage and their voices would never be heard as partisans due to a class system that exists within the ruling Unity Party.
