A Briton and two Ugandans arrested over a fake currency racket in Nairobi were charged yesterday. Geziga Geritjja who claims to be a freelance journalist and businessmen David Mulebi Elly and Mowanda Stephen were allegedly found with fake US dollars amounting to Sh896 million. They were arrested in a house in Kilimani, Nairobi on Sunday. The counterfeit money was found stashed in a safe in the woman’s bedroom.
An investigation report states that detectives were called by a Sudanese tycoon allegedly confined in the house and forced to sign a contract for a joint mining venture the suspects had proposed to him over the internet.
Kibera chief magistrate Cecilia Githua ordered them to deposit Sh1 million bond each. Their passports have also been impounded until the case is resolved.
The prosecution has lined up three witnesses including the Sudanese for the hearing set for July 13. Meanwhile a Kenyan businesswoman and two Congolese also arrested over fake currency will be charged today. Nancy Wangui Mbuthia, Ayub Mathias and Wilson Matobo were allegedly found with fake Sh134 million and a machine used to mint money.
