The new chairman for Arua district Mr Sam Wadri (NRM), has said he will not tolerate corruption, adding that it undermines the integrity of government. “I will not tolerate corruption because our people need better service,” he said at the swearing-in ceremony for Arua district leaders yesterday.
In Nebbi, there was chaos on Monday when the swearing-in flopped after the police blocked it because the case was still in the High Court. The EC declared Mr Ezrom Alenyo (Ind) winner, but he failed to swear in because he was dragged to court by Robert Okumu (NRM), over allegations of irregularities in the elections.
In Zombo, the LC5 chairman, Mr Emmy Kakura, said there was need to improve the roads to promote trade, and fight poverty through lobbying NGOs and government to institute district programmes.
“We need to work on good governance and involve multiple ideas so that we develop the young district,” he said. In Arua Municipality, the Mayor, Mr Charles Asiki, said he would work on improving sanitation and expansion of River Oli Division health centre.
The voters are now waiting to see whether the district leaders will live to their oath. Mr George Candiga, a resident in Arua, said he would like to see improvement in provision of water and power in the district.
“For over 20 years, we have been facing inadequate power. But I think the new leaders should lobby hard ,” he said. In Adjumani, the LC5 chairman, Mr Nixon Owole, said he will strengthen social services. “We shall work to extend and improve service delivery in the areas of health, education, roads and water supply,” he said.
