Confident Simba left the country yesterday evening for Egypt where they will play Wydad Casablanca in the African Champions League playoff on Saturday.Simba, who will be without Patrick Ochan and Mbwana Samatta, left the country beaming with confidence that they will conquer the Moroccan heavyweights.
Speaking before the team’s departure, Simba vice president Godfrey Nyange said players have promised to play their hearts out to send Wydad packing. “We respect Wydad because they are a great club, but we’re well prepared to upset them. We are the giants killers,” he bragged.
“Both sides will be playing on a foreign soil, which is good for our players…we are looking forward to replicating our 2003 feat,” he said.Simba are the only Tanzanian team that boast eliminating a team from the Arab countries. In 2003, they ousted defending champions Zamalek in Cairo.
He added: “We are not carried away by the past though, the team must work hard but I’m 100 per cent confident that we will pip them to the group stage.”We will be cheered by a few fans, but that does not faze us…after eliminating the Morocco outfit the sky will be the limit” Nyange alias Kaburu said.
Simba earned the one-off encounter after winning their appeal against TP Mazembe who fielded an ineligible player when they met in the two-legged duels.TFF president advised Simba players to believe in themselves when they lock horns with their favourite opponents on Saturday.
If Simba advance, they will be in the same group with the likes of Esperance (Tunisia) and Al Ahly of Egypt.
But should they crash out, they will meet Motema Pembe of DR Congo in the Confederation Cup two weeks later.
