BUSINESSMAN Johnny Johnson Doëseb is no longer interested in acquiring South African Premiership side Moroka Swallows, he said yesterday.
The mining tycoon told The Namibian Sport yesterday that he ended his interest in the club following the lengthy estate execution process of the club’s majority shareholder Dieter Bock, who died earlier this year.
He said on top of the uncertainty regarding the future ownership of the club, the fact that Swallows had been struggling on the pitch fuelled his decision to retract his bid. Swallows avoided relegation from the PSL with a 2-0 victory over Mpumalanga Black Aces on the final day of the season.
“We called it off,” said Doëseb. “The process with the estate executors was taking very long to be finalised. Things were even not good at the club and you could see that maintaining the club’s status was their priority.”
Doëseb added that he was unlikely to go into the market in search of another franchise any time soon.
Meanwhile, Doëseb, in his capacity as premier league chairman, said May 30 had been set as the date for the appeal hearing of ousted NPL CEO Mathew Haikali.
Haikali was fired for “financial irregularity” relating to an unauthorised salary hike dating back to September last year.
