President Goodluck Jonathan said yesterday that his determination to oppose the Laurent Gbagbo led government in Cote d’voire was to send the signal to African leaders that they must always do the right thing the way he (Jonathan) insisted on free and fair elections in Nigeria.
Jonathan who made his position known at a meeting with French President, Nicholas Sarkozy, at the Yamoussoukro Presidential Villa, Cote d’ voire before both leaders proceeded to the Felix Houphouet Foundation for Peace Centre for the inauguration ceremony of President Ouattara, also expressed satisfaction over Sarkozy’s leadership of the G8 and G20 and France’s aid to Africa.
He said, “I insisted on doing the right thing because I needed to have the moral right to challenge political wrong doing in the continent”.
While thanking Sarkozy for his country’s immense contribution in helping to stabilise Nigeria, Jonathan enjoined the French president to continue to support the country and Africa in surmounting its challenges especially in the area of good governance.
“We need your support and encouragement to succeed, we will always appreciate your show of love and interest for Nigeria” Jonathan stated.
Earlier, Sarkozy told Jonathan that his country was committed to effort in rallying international support for Nigeria, just as it spearheaded the lobby for Africa’s membership of the United Nation’s Permanent Council as well as zonal representation in its Security Council.
According to him, Nigeria as a “giant of Africa” has enormous economical and political potentials to remain great as a country.
