From Chelsea to Manchester City – the clubs who could sign Sergio Aguero this summer

It was merely a week ago that club chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin moved to quash rumours of a move elsewhere for Kun, something the Spanish side have had to do in past transfer windows too. Yet it would be only days later when the player himself would announce his intention to leave, adding that he and Atletico had an agreement: “I then had the promise of the club that they would not impede my departure in June 2011.” However, with a £39.2m buyout clause in his contract, things might not go as smoothly as he may have hoped.

Barcelona

Bruno Satin, Aguero’s agent, has claimed that the Catalans – among others – have been monitoring Aguero for quite some time now. With another Liga title wrapped up and guaranteed Champions League football, the player himself would find it difficult to turn down the Blaugrana – but Camp Nou appears a less likely destination. With Villarreal’s Giuseppe Rossi seemingly Barca’s top transfer target, it would be a surprise if the Argentine were to appear alongside international team-mate Lionel Messi next term.

Chelsea

Always a force to be reckoned with at transfer time, Chelsea are one of the few clubs with the spending power to deal with Aguero’s minimum fee clause. Roman Abramovich’s decision to sack Carlo Ancelotti after one poor season – despite winning a double in 2010 – shows the cash-rich Russian owner’s hunger for success. With Didier Drogba looking like he’s on the way out of Stamford Bridge, another Spanish speaker in attack could be just what the under-performing Fernando Torres needs to find his feet at the English side.

Inter

Never a club to shy away when it comes to spending the big bucks, Italian giants Inter are also said to be in line for the striker’s signature. With Diego Milito and Goran Pandev falling out of favour, it seems a summer move is on the cards for them, making room for a new attacker. And, with star frontman Samuel Eto’o now 30 years old, the Nerazzurri will also have to consider the long-term attacking future of their side. Nevertheless, it seems as though another wantaway Argentine, in the form of Manchester City’s Carlos Tevez, is the favourite to set up shop at the front of Inter’s attack.

Entering a new era as they return to the Stadio delle Alpi with a shiny new coach, it’s all about changing for the better at Juventus this summer. And, with the Italians making a serious bid to return to their former glory, a new dangerman will no doubt be brought in to lead the revolution from the front. With Juventus, it’s not a case of whether they can afford the player, but more that they would probably be unwilling to pay such a high price – and they also have the matter of the Alberto Aquilani saga to keep their minds occupied for now.

Man City

‘The City link’ has become an inevitability when a player of any prestige makes himself available in the transfer window, but in this case the English club are actually one of the few sides that can afford the star. A summer clearout is on the horizon for the Citizens, with star striker Tevez seemingly leading the queue for the exit door, but the rumblings this season are quiet, and Udinese boy wonder Alexis Sanchez is undoubtedly higher up Roberto Mancini’s shortlist of attackers right now.

Real Madrid

One of the clubs most heavily linked with a move, Real Madrid also boast the financial means to sign Aguero – but would it be justified? With Gonzalo Higuain back and Karim Benzema finally hitting top form, Emmanuel Adebayor has been sent back to Manchester City with a ‘no longer needed’ note attached. If Atleti’s derby rivals are to purchase a backup for Higuain and Benzema, to bring in one so costly seems drastic. However, with father-in-law Diego Maradona claiming he sees Kun moving to Real, the draw of working with Jose Mourinho, added to the fact that he already lives in Madrid, a cross-town switch could still be on the cards.

Tottenham

It is no secret that Tottenham’s strikers have been misfiring this season, prompting a call for fresh talent at the front of the London club’s attack. But, as it stands, a player in Kun’s price range is impossible for Spurs, as they could not afford the player outright or pay his wages. However, should Harry Redknapp see Luka Modric or Gareth Bale sold on, there would be money there to capture the kind of forward that the fans are crying out for. Yet, with no Champions League football to offer, Aguero remains a long shot for the English side.
