THE Namibia Local Authorities Sports and Recreation Association (NALASRA) will stage its third annual sports games from Thursday to Saturday.
Briefing the media on the upcoming games, the acting Secretary General (SG) of NALASRA, Bartholomeus !Aibeb, said the games will take place at the Sam Nujoma Stadium and Khomasdal Sports Stadium.
He noted that 23 local authorities in the country will take part in the games, of which the village councils of Karas, Aroab, Berseba, Bethanie, Koës and Tses have combined forces to form one team.
The different sports codes that will be participated in are football, netball, volleyball, pool, darts, tug-of-war, marathon and a fun walk.
Said !Aibeb: “There is no age restriction, and elderly people within the workforce of the local authorities can take part in the fun walk.”
The Minister of Regional and Local Government, Housing and Rural Development, Jerry Ekandjo, will open the games on May 26.
He noted that the President of the Southern Africa Inter-Municipal Sports Association (SAIMSA), David Sono, and SAIMSA SG Thembi Ndlamini will observe the games.
Member countries of SAIMSA include Namibia, Botswana, Swaziland, South Africa and Mozambique.
In an effort to raise funds for NALASRA, !Aibeb said a gala dinner will be held on May 27, adding that the public is also invited to attend.
The City of Windhoek has contributed N$100 000 towards the games.
The City’s Strategic Executive for Economic Development and Community Services, George Mayumbelo, said their contribution is partly to ensure that the games run smoothly and for the safety and security of the participating local authorities’ employees. – Nampa
