Nunoo Mensah wants media to question Rawlings over GHS90 million security tape

The National Security Advisor is asking the media to use its inquisitorial skills to extract information from ex-President John Rawlings regarding the controversial GHS 90 million security tape which has so far proven elusive.

Rtd Brigadier General Nunoo Mensah and the Bureau of National Investigations appeared to have hit a cul de sack in their bid to get the mysterious tape from the confidante of the Rawlingses –Herbert Mensah- and asked the media to help out in questioning ex-president Rawlings to unravel the truth.

Mr. Mensah in an interview claimed to have access to security tapes in which unnamed personalities were discussing a GHS90 million to be used by President John Mills for his flagbearership race in July.

His comments sparked a huge controversy with the supporters of the Konadu campaign team feeding on it and citing it as an example of the abuse of incumbency.

Over the weekend, the Mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Samuel Sarpong was reported to have been attacked by armed robbers at his residence ostensibly to steal GHS 30 million of the controversial GHS 90 million which was said to be in his possession.

When he was dragged to the BNI to provide the security tapes and to substantiate the allegations of 90 million cedis budget for the successful execution of the July Primary, Mr Mensah said the tapes are in the possession of ex-president Rawlings.

When Joy News contacted the security advisor to find out if his outfit will invite Mr. Rawlings and question him on the matter, Rtd Brigadier General Nunoo Mensah said the media should take up the mantle from there.

“I wouldn’t call him; I don’t think I should call him. You the media want the truth. So why can’t you approach him. As you are talking to me why can’t you talk to him? I am not chewing you up; so he won’t chew you up.

“Ask him if he has the tape; he will answer you,” Brigadier General Nunoo Mensah told Joy News’ Eric Ahianyo.

The security advisor only last week told the media how crucial it was to get to the bottom of the allegation and to unravel the truth.

But having ceded his statutory power of interrogation and investigation to the media it is not clear what the next line of action is.
