The Tanzania Cricket Association (TCA) chief executive officer, Zulfikar Rehemtullah, has landed a special award from the ICC-Africa for his efforts to promote the sport.

Rehemtullah, who doubles as the national team coach, guided his side to finish fourth in the ICC Africa Division 2 Championship.Speaking during a brief prize giving ceremony, African Cricket Association (ACA) official Cassim Sulliman lavished praise on the TCA chief saying his diligent efforts were invaluable.

“Cricket was played by a few people in Tanzania, but through Rehemtullah’s efforts, the sport is one of the most preferred in his country.”His contribution in Tanzania means prosperity on the continent, so the ICC-Africa awards him a special honour for promoting cricket,” said the ACA chief.

Rehemtullah is one of the officials who spearheaded the development of cricket in the country besides championing for the introduction of women cricket.

Though Tanzania has yet to hit the desired standards, the national teams have been progressively improving on the international stage. The women team participated in the ICC World League qualifiers for Africa held in Nairobi last year, but they were out-duelled by mighty South Africa and Zimbabwe.A similar award went to Sierra Leone and Rwanda, the countries that have made the grades recently and are challenging promotion.
