Blackpool fans may be crying into their tangerines following their relegation but one Irish punter is very happy to see Ian Holloway‘s entertainers go down.

The canny gambler predicted Blackpool would lose their top flight status at the first attempt last month. He wagered €30,000 (£26,100) on April 14 at odds of 4/6 (1.66) and picked up a cool €50,000 (£43,500) for his troubles after Manchester United ended the promoted side’s adventure by winning 4-2 at Old Trafford.

His bet looked to be in jeopardy when Blackpool went into a 2-1 lead but the champions retained their unbeaten home record to stage a comeback. The Tangerines were as long as 2/1 (3.0) to be relegated earlier in the season following a series of great results which saw them confound pundits who predicted they would get 10 points or less.

“It must have been hell for the punter,” said William Hill spokesman Tony Kenny, “At one stage it looked like he was going to lose €30,000, but thanks to a final flurry from Manchester United he’ll be collecting €50,000 from us.”

“I bet he’ll be sending a nice bottle of bubbly to Sir Alex Ferguson,” added Mr Kenny.

Free-kick hero Charlie Adam is being tipped to be gracing Old Trafford on a more regular basis next season. Manchester United are currently second favourites behind Liverpool to snap up the dead ball ace.
