So, another Premier League season complete and what a note it ended on as a tense relegation dogfight eventually saw Blackpool and Birmingham City join West Ham to form this year’s relegated trio.

At one stage of Sunday afternoon, Ian Holloway’s charges had navigated their way out of the drop zone at Old Trafford, but Manchester United replied in typical champions-style gusto and ran out 4-2 winners – Michael Owen grabbing his eagerly anticipated “important goal” to put the final nail in Blackpool’s coffin.

Alex McLeish’s League Cup winners at Birmingham similarly were on their way to safety before Wolves scored their second to go ahead on goal difference and then Roman Pavlyuchenko completed his brace and secured Tottenham’s victory, condemning the Blues to life in the Championship next season.

Wigan, who started Sunday in 19th, were tossing manager Roberto Martinez in the air in jubilation by the end of play after a single Hugo Rodellega strike secured the three points at Stoke, ensuring their survival.

Wolves and Blackburn, who were both in danger of being relegated, played out a thrilling encounter in which Steve Kean’s charges ran out 3-2 winners but with all the results going their way, the two sides sealed their Premier League status for another season.

Elsewhere, Bolton, who were sitting in seventh spot at the end of February, continued their miserable end to the season and lost 2-0 at home to Manchester City. Owen Coyle’s side have ended up 14th after a season spent, for the vast majority, in the top 10.

Last season’s winners Chelsea also tasted defeat on the final day as Everton ran out 1-0 winners thanks to a sublime solo effort from Jermaine Beckford.

Aston Villa’s end-of-season revival saw them finish in ninth following a 1-0 win over Liverpool, while Fulham sealed eighth spot after drawing 2-2 with Arsenal.

West Ham’s miserable season closed with a convincing 3-0 defeat at home to Sunderland, while Newcastle United squandered a three-goal lead to draw 3-3 with West Brom, midfielder Somen Tchoyi netting a hat-trick for Roy Hodgson’s men.
