Nairobi — The Kenya Power & Lighting Company is scouting for a consultant to help it draw up a power distribution master plan.
The firm has placed press advertisements for a consultant who will assess power requirements and develop a distribution master plan to all counties by 2030.
The consultant is expected to develop cost effective strategies to achieve a robust distribution system, ensure adequate power distribution in each of the 46 counties and maintain a reliable supply.
The master plan will also provide recommendations for an optimum efficiency distribution system, minimise power loss and accelerate customer connection and rural electrification plans.
The consultant will determine power needs for each county in existing and potential commercial centres, and recommend alternative supply lines to areas with high demand for ease of planned and breakdown maintenance.
The power distribution master framework will hinge on least cost power development plan, developed by energy experts, including Kenya Power and Lighting Company which highlights the country’s demand forecast, and generation and transmission plans.
At present, only 29 per cent of Kenyans are connected but the government aims to increase this to 40 per cent by 2020.
This will be achieved through a programme implemented by the power firm and the Rural Electrification Authority.
Kenya Power has been connecting 200,000 customers to the national grid every year since 2008 under the programme.
