ASABA – LEGAL battle in the petition by the Democratic Peoples Party, DPP, governorship candidate during the April 26, gubernatorial poll is expected to commence today at the Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Asaba.
Chief Great Ogboru’s petition is among five others filed in connection with the governorship election in the state.
They include those by Prince Obaro Unuafe, Peoples Progressive Party, PPP; Chief Afro Biukeme, Mega Progressive Peoples Party, MPPP; Chief Sam Nkire, Progressive Peoples Alliance, PPA, and Collins Eselemo, National Conscience Party, NCP.
In all, 48 petitions were received by the Governorship, National and State Houses of Assembly tribunal in the state.
Secretary to the Tribunal, Mrs. Deborah Musa, who spoke on the number of petitions, said five were received for the Senate election, 12 for House of Representatives and 26 received over the state House of Assembly election.
Ogboru, in the petition, is argued that “by the lawful votes cast at the election to the office of Governor of Delta State held on April 26, 2011, I (Ogboru) ought to have been returned and should be returned as the duly elected governor of Delta State.”
Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan of the ruling Peoples Democratic party, PDP, was declared the winner of the governorship poll by polling a total of 525,793 votes to beat his closest rival, Chief Ogboru, who scored 433,834 votes.
There are two election petitions tribunals in the state, while one is saddled with that of the governorship poll, the other is handling the National and State Houses of Assembly petitions.
