Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has revealed he would relish signing Aston Villa’s goalkeeper Brad Friedel but has also stated that he believes in Heurelho Gomes and that the Brazilian will not be replaced.

The Brazilian keeper has failed to find consistent form this season and Spurs have been linked with a number of other keepers including Ben Foster, Shay Given and Maarten Stekelenberg from Birmingham, Manchester City and Ajax respectively.

Asked about Friedel, Redknapp told reporters: “He’s a very good keeper, but there are a few clubs in for him.

“Liverpool are in for him, West Brom too. It’s interesting. We’ll have to see where we go.

“I think he’s Gomes made saves that he’s had no right to make, some incredible saves that only a keeper of his quality could make.”

However, Aston Villa’s caretaker boss Gary McAllister is encouraging the American keeper to stay put.

“Taking into consideration the type of season this has been for us then Brad has been a fantastic pro and he’s also been a very good keeper,” McAllister told the Sunday Mirror.

“He’s proved that throughout his time here, although that isn’t new because I played with him at Liverpool and maybe he was a wee bit unlucky not to get more games there.

“The offer of a new contract is a reward for what he’s done, and we certainly hope this is not his farewell, otherwise we wouldn’t be offering it to him.

“Because of his age his schedule is different from other keepers, but he’s a guy that knows how to manage his training. You put it all together and he is a top, top player.”

The 40-year-old has made a record 39 Premier League appearances this season for the Villa Park club.
