Addis Ababa — Ethiopia has said it is taking new measures to improve border security after a conflict claimed more than 20 lives.
It said Friday that it was keen to avoid further cross-border conflict with Kenya after Merille militia killed members of Kenya’s Turkana community last week.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Dina Mufti told to the Nation in Addis Ababa that Ethiopia regrets the unfortunate incident.
Ambassador Dina stated an exemplary relationship between the two nations cannot be harmed due to the incident.
She said Ethiopia had stepped up security measures and established mechanisms to avoid recurrence of any trouble.
A joint commission from Kenya and Uganda will work out to provide alternative water and pasture for nomad communities in the border area, she said.
Kenyan President Kibaki and Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi held a consultative meeting during the occasion of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni swearing in in Kampala last week.
