The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has said Angolan refugees in Zambia wishing to repatriate with the assistance of the UN Refugee agency have only until end of September 2011 to do so, following the re commencement of the organised Angolan repatriation, UNHCR Representative in Zambia, Ms Joyce Mends-Cole has announced.
Ms Mends-Cole said the need for clarification had arisen due to a misinterpretation of the timelines for cessation of refugee status for Angolans on December 31, 2011 and voluntary repatriation – end September 2011.
Ms Mends-Cole said the Angolan voluntary repatriation which recommences on June 1, would only be for four months up to the end of September 2011 due to weather circumstances.
Refugees participating in the repatriation would benefit from transport assistance and a reintegration package provided by the Angolan Executive.
