The West Coast Region (WCR) will on the 28th of May 2011, observe the May Day celebration by organising sporting activities in commemoration of the day.
It could be recalled that the May Day was earlier observed world-wide on May 1st this year. The WCR May Day celebration was disclosed at a press briefing held at the Governor’s Office in Brikama.
Speaking to journalists at the press briefing,Alhaji Lamin Sanneh, governor of the region, underscored the significance of sports, saying it can bring about peace, change and unity. He added that one of the most important things about sports is that it promotes health and culture, which he described as key features of development in any nation. He called on the participating institutions to cultivate a high sense of peace and conform to all the regulations during the event. Governor Sanneh stated that the WCR’s May Day celebration should be a continuous process from now on, as a way of promoting sports in the country.
For his part, Babung Fatty, chairman of the organising committee for this year’s WCR May Day celebration, gave a historical background of the region’s participation in May Day sports. According to him, the main aim of the event is to intensify unity among the institutions within the region for a more sustainable development and also to identify people with great potentials for possible national events.
Fatty finally disclosed that 18 institutions are ready to take part in the celebration within the region.
