School children in Bolgatanga and some parts of the Upper East region will not be able to attend school this week after rainstorms ravaged the Municipality ripping off roofs of schools in the area and destroying other properties running into millions of Ghana cedis.
Joseph Osei, regional correspondent of Joy FM told Adom News that the heavy rains, accompanied by violent winds started on Tuesday and stopped on Wednesday morning after wreaking havoc on private and public properties.
Upper East Regional Minister, Mark Woyongo who toured the areas devastated by rains told Adom News that the damage caused is quite substantial in both physical and economic terms.
According to the Minister, a large number of Shea nut trees were washed away by the rainstorm and that can go a long way to affect the economy of the region.
Apart from the schools, the entire roof of the Bolgatanga Municipal police station and the kitchen of the Regional Coordinating Council were also ripped off.
Mr. Woyongo disclosed that he had asked the Regional Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to take an inventory of schools and private properties that have been damaged by the storms.
The rainstorm is said to be the heaviest witnessed by the region in years.
