The paper reports that the Congolese international has edged ahead of Phil Jagielka, Gary Cahill and Mamadou Sakho on Arsene Wenger’s defensive shopping lift, with the 27-year-old – allegedly priced at £12 million – viewed as the most cost-effective reinforcement at the back.

Samba had appeared close to an Ewood Park exit in January and recently revealed that he was on the verge of moving to the Emirates in the winter window, only for the deal to fall through.

The towering centre-back has since signed a new deal with Blackburn but this month hinted that he would consider any proposals to leave the club in the summer.

“Everybody knows that I am an ambitious player,” the player was reported as saying. “I am at an age now where I want to try to do something. You only have one career and it would be a shame to not make the best of it.

“I am happy at Blackburn but I will study any opportunities that come my way this year.”
