UP Caucus Chair Under Pressure to Quit

Credible legislative sources have told this paper that the Chair of the ruling Unity Party Legislature Caucus, Dr. Bhofal Chambers, is under mounting pressure to resign his post.

“…He is under enormous pressure by House Speaker Alex Tyler, Rep Ketterkumuhn Murray and other key party officials to resign,” the source said.

The legislative source, who preferred anonymity, said that Chambers has been cited to a meeting early next week to pressurize him into resigning or be booted out.

Other sources said the Executive Mansion is not entirely pleased with Chamber’s brand of advocacy, especially in Maryland, so it is behind the pressure to dump him as Caucus chairman.

When asked, Chambers refused to comment, neither confirming nor denying that the party wants him removed.

Recently, Chambers has been vocal of his suspicion that there is a foul play in the process of awarding a hefty US$74m, 50-year government contract to the Cavalla Rubber Corporation in his district.

He has said that he doesn’t see how government’s negotiators would accept a reduced monetary value of the proposal CRC offered from US$78 million to US$74 million, when rubber price has increased more than triple on the world market.

Although the National Investment Commission (NIC) has declared this deal as a milestone for the resuscitation of the country’s rubber sector, Chambers’ view is contrary and has vowed to fight it.
