Abuja — The recent good results by Nigeria did not help as the country dropped one spot in the latest ranking released by FIFA yesterday.

The Super Eagles are now 39 in the world and the fifth best in Africa.

Nigeria won an international friendly against Sierra Leone and Kenya and defeated Ethiopia in an African Cup of Nations qualifier.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles are now ranked fifth on the continent.

There are no changes in the top three in Africa as Ghana, Ivory Coast and Egypt lead the way and maintained their 15, 21 and 36 positions respectively in the world rankings. South Africa displaced Nigeria as the fourth best team in Africa.

Meanwhile, Spain and the Netherlands continue to set the pace with some distance ahead of Brazil, Germany and Argentina. Major changes are also in the ranking. Among the top 25, only Chile (13th, up 1) and Japan (14th, down 1) have traded places.

Senegal (40th, up 11), have made greater headway, clawing their way back into the top 50 for the first time since January 2009. With no teams dropping out of the leading half-century – Albania (unchanged) and Colombia (down 1) share 50th place. UEFA continues to be the best-represented confederation in the top 50, with 29 teams, followed by CAF (9 teams), CONMEBOL (6), the AFC (4), CONCACAF (3) and the OFC (0).
