Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand hits back at critics: Why have a 25-man squad if you’re hammered for utilising it?

Rio Ferdinand has hit back at Steve Morgan after the Wolves chief called for Manchester United to be fined if they field a weakened team against Blackpool on Sunday.

Wolves themselves were hit with a £25,000 fine last season for doing the same thing at Old Trafford as Mick McCarthy rested key players, but this time around his club want United punished.

Ferdinand, though, is adamant his manager Sir Alex Ferguson should be able to do what he wants, and even suggested he got away with fielding weakened teams earlier in the season.

“Why have 25man squad if you’re hammered for utilising it?! It doesn’t make sense,” Ferdinand tweeted.

“When we changed eight or nine players (and won) for one or two games earlier in the season I didn’t hear the call for docking points then?!”

A victory for Blackpool on Sunday against Ferdinand’s team could spell disaster for Wolves, who are just one point above the 18th-placed Seasiders in one of the closest relegation battles in years.
