Dr John Kwakye, a senior economist at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), on Wednesday said banks, fiscal and monetary authorities must be held accountable for the high interest rates persistence in Ghana. “The monetary authorities cannot remained aloof, but must exercise the regulatory authority to correct an obvious market failure in the credit system by capping interest rate spreads at the minimum,” he said. In addition, Dr Kwakye said high bank lending rates and large spread could not be justified in terms of costs and risks in the industry, but a reflection of industrial inefficiencies, low competition and collusive practices.

Justice Emmanuel Amadi of the Banjul High Court on Tuesday, 17th May 2011, cautioned Bakary Darboe, a Police officer who was testifying as a prosecution witness in the criminal case of Amadou Bailo Camara, Mankamany Sanneh, Mamadi Darboe, Sergeant Balla Musa Saidy and Sergeant Modou Lamin Bah.

The prosecution witness was cautioned by the court while he was being cross examined by Mankamany Sanneh, the second defendant. The witness was being cross examined on an allegation of torture. The defendant alleged that he was subjected to severe torture at the Serious Crime Unit while his statement was being obtained by the Police.

His lordship, Justice Amadi urged the Police to take care since there is a case of torture being tried by the court
