Tottenham’s Rafael van der Vaart reveals he will ‘do everything he can’ to be fit to play against Birmingham

With a Europa League place at stake heading into the last game of the season, Tottenham playmaker Rafael van der Vaart has revealed he wants to do everything he can to make sure he is fit to play in Sunday’s match against Birmingham City.

The Dutchman has been an important player for Harry Redknapp’s side and his goal against Liverpool at Anfield in Spurs’ 2-0 victory last weekend was his 13th in the league, with the win meaning that the team need only to match the Reds’ result against Aston Villa to qualify for Europe.

However, Van der Vaart took a knock in last weekend’s match and is a doubt for the final game of the season.

“I’ll do everything to make sure I’m fit for last game of the season,” he said via his official Twitter account.

But Spurs have received good news on the injury front as long-term absentee Ledley King continues to make progress in his recovery.

The defender had been out since October but was back in the side to face Liverpool last Sunday and paid tribute to central defensive partner Michael Dawson, who he believes has had a fantastic season.

“Michael has been outstanding,” King told the club’s official website.

“He always is when I play alongside him. He’s getting better and better and his game has elevated to new levels.

“It’s nice to play alongside him. I knew I would get tired during the game, that I would have spells when I would have to dig deep and it’s great to have someone like Michael there alongside you.

“I thought Danny Rose was fantastic at left-back as well, it’s great to have those fresh legs in there!”
