The regional youth organizer of the party, Mohammed Amin Adam Abio, who doubles as the regional NYEP Coordinator, engaged in a free-for-all with Bukari Y. Alhassan, his colleague.
This led to the abrupt end of the newspaper review pogramme that was billed to end at 10am.
Mr. Amin Adam was not scheduled to be a panelist for Tuesday’s review session but allegedly stormed the station to teach Mr. Alhassan a lesson over some alleged disparaging remarks Alhassan made about him.
Host of the programme Mohammed Ibn Abdallah looked on helplessly as the two traded fisticuffs, leaving listeners to enjoy the sound of heavy punches from the studio microphones.
The two are said to belong to opposing camps in the run for the flagbearership of the party which has generated several controversies in the past weeks.
Sources say Bukari Yahaya Alhassan is a member of the Friends of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings (FONKAR) while Mohammed Amin Adam Abio is an advocate of the Get Atta Mills Elected (GAME) fraternity.
Prior to Tuesday’s violent exchanges, Mr. Amin Abio was alleged to have lambasted some supporters of FONKAR, including Mr. Bukari Yahaya, on a live radio discussion programme, leveling accusations against them.
Bukari Yahaya, during a similar discussion with some NPP activists on Herbert Mensah’s invitation by the BNI and other matters, took the opportunity to hit back and accused the NYEP Coordinator, Mohammed Adam Abio, of sexually exploiting applicants of the programme before engaging them.
He further linked him to alleged financial malfeasance and accused him of ‘grabbing’ when others who suffered with the party were left with nothing.
Mohammed Adam Abio, who was listening to the programme on his radio, reportedly took offence to Yahaya’s submission and stormed the station. He confronted Yahaya, leading to the hot physical exchanges.
The situation subsequently led to the spilling of beans, with Adam Abio alleging that Bukari Yahaya acquired fake certificates and was therefore not qualified to cast any aspersions on anybody.
NDC supporters within the Tamale metropolis who listened to proceedings rushed to the station and stopped the two from further destroying each other’s image, indicating that it would affect the party’s internal unity.
At the time of filing this report, sources hinted that the regional hierarchy of the party was summoning an emergency meeting to resolve the impasse between the two.
The latest incident comes less than a fortnight after two leading members of the party, on the same network, accused each other of contract-grabbing to the detriment of the masses of the party, supporters whose contributions helped the NDC to win the 2008 elections.
Alhaji Umar Yussif Alhassan, the NDC regional secretary and Chief Njogulana traded these accusations to the shock of listeners and foot-soldiers in the region who have constantly complained that the few executives are the only ones benefitting from the party’s 2008 victory.
Chief Njogulana, a known party stalwart and a traditional ruler, claimed the regional executives were grabbing contracts and amassing wealth from all angles without thinking about the unity of the party which was currently at the crossroads, but the NDC scribe took an exception to that.
