THE Mariental Urban constituency councillor in the Hardap Region has called on banks and the Ministry of Trade and Industry to give support to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
Barakias Namwandi said in the National Council yesterday that for the economy to grow the ministry and banks should provide loans to the SME sector.
“We would like to see more money allocated to the ministry to enable it support the SMEs,” he said. “SMEs are the backbone of the economy,” said Namwandi.
He said some banks were not doing enough to give loans to SMEs.
Isai Kapenambili, the regional councillor for the Okahao constituency in the Omusati Region, said although many people were excited about the establishment of the Ohorongo Cement factory, it has not changed the price of cement.
He said many people had hoped that locally produced cement would be cheaper.
In her contribution to the budget debate, the Deputy Minister of Veterans’ Affairs, Hilma Nikanor, commended the Ministry of Trade and Industry for building an open market at Keetmanshoop.
Nikanor, the regional councillor for the Keetmanshoop Urban constituency in the Karas Region, called on the ministry to speed up the establishment of the SME Bank.
