Kenya: ICC in Support of Nation’s Cricket

The International Cricket Council (ICC) are backing Cricket Kenya’s widespread proposals to advance the game at all levels in the country.

The proposals are as a result of the wide reaching review which followed the disappointing performance by the Kenya national team at the 2011 Cricket World Cup. Both CK and ICC conducted extensive reviews in the wake of the poor at the global stage. ICC High Performance manager Richard Done visited Kenya to discuss the findings and CK’s plans for the future.

CK Chief Executive Tom Sears said CK have conducted a comprehensive review of all areas and were commended by ICC for their approach and professionalism in the review process. “The proposals we have made in conjunction with the ICC have the potential to have a hugely positive effect on the game if they are embraced by the cricket community and all stakeholders,” he said.

The proposals address every area of the game including governance, national teams, development, facilities, domestic structure, staffing, selection and talent development. During his visit, Done and CK officials met sports assistant minister Kabando wa Kabando, who commended the action CK have undertaken. Sears said CK and the governing council had at their respective meetings on May 7-8 unanimously approved the widespread changes which will be made public after consulting the ministry of sport. “There is undoubted potential in Kenya and the ICC is very supportive of CK’s efforts to ensure this potential is realised. CK, like any other member of the ICC, is subject to regular reviews of all areas including governance, finance, development and high performance and ICC are very satisfied with the progress that is being made,” he said.

Sears said they are extremely grateful to ICC for their input and assistance during the review. He said they are confident if the changes are implemented will lift Kenya’s standards.
