Godwin Sunday of Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja, was accused of impersonation and attempt to commit an offence.
Prosecutor Philips Akogwu stated in court that on May 15, Corporal Akogi Monday and other policemen attached to ACCOS 417 received a call from the Police Command’s control room to investigate an incident at Deeper Life Junction in Asokoro, Abuja.
He said that the team quickly moved there and arrested the accused while he was trying to extort money from one Onwemene Pius, a commercial driver, for the offence of beating traffic light.
The prosecutor said the accused introduced himself as a National Intelligence Agency officer before the driver and threatened to carry him to their office, before he was apprehended by the police.
He said during police investigations, it was discovered that the accused is a commercial motorcyclist, who confessed that he impersonated an NIA official to extort money.
When the charges were read to the accused, he pleaded guilty initially but when asked to explain how it happened, admitted stopping the driver when he beat traffic light but denied parading himself as an NIA official.
He told the magistrate that he was previously convicted by an Abuja Magistrate’s Court sitting in Karu for extortion and impersonation, where he was sentenced to one year imprisonment or to pay a fine.
After listening to the accused, the prosecutor urged the court to remand him in prison custody on the grounds that investigation has not been concluded and he might jump bail, being a habitual offender.
Magistrate Musa Jobbo ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the case to June 6 for hearing.
