Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has claimed that his side’s inability to dominate ‘lesser’ games was eventually their downfall as the Gunners recorded another season without a trophy.

Arsenal managed to keep pace with league leaders and eventual champions Manchester United for much of the season and back in March they could have potentially won four trophies by the end of the season, but failed to win any.

The north London side were beaten in the League Cup final by Birmingham City, and were eliminated against Barcelona in the Champions League, despite winning the first leg.

However, Wenger believes displays against lesser Premier League sides have been what have cost his side another year without silverware.

Speaking to Arsenal TV Online, Wenger said: “We were not able to dominate in the lesser games.

“We were not ruthless enough and put ourselves into a bad position, which was a little bit the story of the season.

“Away from home we did well, against the big teams at home we did well, but in the smaller games we would not raise our level of concentration to be ruthless enough.

“Disappointments have been added to disappointments and it is difficult to fight against that.”

Arsenal are currently sitting in third place in the Premier League with one match to play, but should Manchester City win on Tuesday night at home to Stoke, Roberto Mancini’s side will be in pole position for an automatic Champions League spot.
