Ahead of the final round of Premier League matches on Sunday, former England striker Steve Bull has suggested that Steven Fletcher could be the key for Wolves’ survival hopes.

The former Wolves man believes the club record signing could make or break their season.

Fletcher arrived at Molineux during the summer of 2010 after he was relegated in his debut season with Burnley following a move from Hibernian.

Wolves are in 16th place in the Premier League with 40 points going into the last weekend of the season, but are just one point ahead of the three teams below them, meaning they could be relegated if they fail to beat Blackburn Rovers, the team directly above them, on goal difference.

Fletcher, according to Bull, will be key to any relegation survival with the Scotland international scoring six goals in his last eight matches.

Speaking to Press Association Sport, Bull said: “A lot of people were saying when Doyley was out, no-one was going to take his place.

“He has done so well during the last two years and been exceptional.

“We’ve done well to keep him in for that many games, being the lone striker for all the season.

“Fletcher has come in, he’s got his feet under the door and had a few games under his belt now.

“He’s been showing he is as good as Kevin Doyle with his work-rate and goals.

“He hadn’t been getting much of a sniff because of Doyley’s form but Fletcher scored a lot of goals for Burnley.

“It is not a fluke what he is doing now. He is a natural goalscorer. He has proven to be that now with his strikes outside the box, headers inside the box, little flick-ons.

“He is an all-round good striker and it is a good job he has come into good form when Doyley was out.”

Bull also believes that Fletcher himself will be hoping Stephen Ward starts on Sunday, as the Irishman’s workrate definitely helps out other players.

“Wardy has got a great engine,” he added. “He can give you 80-90 minutes full throttle and then carry him off on a stretcher.

“His energy on the pitch is unbelievable and I’m sure Fletch will have appreciated it and the work he puts in.”
