Two people were separately rescued at the Likoni crossing channel after they attempted to commit suicide at the weekend. The two, a man and a woman, are from Nairobi and claim they have been bewitched by their family members.
They were rescued by members of the public who dived in the sea as soon as the two separately jumped into the water. Hawaa Ibrahim, 28, is a mother of two and resides in Nairobi’s California Estate, jumped off MV Kwale moments after it had taken off from island side.
She claimed she had suffered from depression and her relatives had taken her to a witch doctor claiming that she had been bewitched. “I have been abandoned by my family members. My husband Said Abdul an engineer in Nairobi left me and I had lost hope in life,” said the mother.
The man, Nichodemus Masila, 33, a father of two Nairobi’s Kariobangi estate had come to visit his cousin in Likoni who had promised to offer him a job.
He failed to meet up with his cousin and quickly became desperate. He said he has spent about a week in Mombasa and his cousin’s phone has been off since he arrived. “I was not in a position to provide basic needs for my family after I was bankrupt and my business was closed. “So I decided to come to Coast in a bid to rescue my financial status. After all my belonging was stolen on the way and I felt I have been bewitched. The only option for me was to die,” said Masila.
The two are being held at Kenya Ports Authority’s police station. They will be arraigned in court today to face charges of attempted suicide.
The Port Polce boss Agnes Mudambi urged the public to consult their family members on their whereabouts. “The lady will have to be medically examined to be sure if the claim that she is suffering from depression is true,” said Mudambi.
