Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand has declared his pride in playing for the current Red Devils side and has praised the squad for their togetherness.

United won their 19th top-flight English title on Saturday with a 1-1 draw at Ewood Park against Blackburn, a match that appeared to not be going their way until a Wayne Rooney penalty gave them the point they needed.

The latest trophy made United the most successful side in English top-flight history, surpassing Liverpool who had kept that proud record since 1990 when they won their 18th title.

Ferdinand knew he had to win trophies at the club before he signed from Leeds United for £29 million in 2002 and has another shot at silverware when Sir Alex Ferguson’s side faces Barcelona in the Champions League final on May 28.

Speaking to talkSPORT, the former West Ham United man said: “When I first came to Manchester United all I thought about was making sure I etched myself a little bit within the history of the club and to do that meant winning trophies.

“I have been fortunate enough to be part of squads that have won trophies. You just really enjoy those moments.

“To be part of a club with such great history and be part of a successful team within that history is the icing on the cake.”

After United mathematically became Champions on Saturday, Ferdinand hailed his team-mates, believing that although they don’t necessarily have a player one might refer to as a ‘world-beater’, the current team is committed to the cause.

He added: “The resilience in this squad is what has made us stand apart. The manager has said we maybe haven’t got a Ronaldo-type player like we did before but the team ethic in this squad is phenomenal.

“You have seen that over the season with various different results.”
