Namibian boxers are on a roll at the Zone 4 Amateur Boxing Championships in Gabarone, Botswana on Tuesday with four boxers progressing to the semifinals, while two more have already qualified for the final.
Tobias Munihango in the +91kg Super Heavyweight division and Johannes Shilimedima in the -91kg heavyweight division have already progressed to the final of their categories after winning their opening bouts. Due to the scarcity of boxers in their categories they have already qualified for their respective finals.
Four more boxers won their quarterfinal bouts on Tuesday to progress to the semifinals. They are Namibia’s Commonwealth gold medallist Jafet Uutoni in the 49kg category; Simon Johannes in the 52kg category; Elias Nashivela in the 75kg category; and Mejandjae Kasuto in the 81kg category.
Three more Namibian boxers have an opportunity of reaching the semifinals if they win their quarterfinal bouts on Wednesday.
They are Andreas Amupolo (52kg category), Titus Iyambo (60kg) and Michael Kavari (64kg).
Assistant coach Immanuel Moses was confident that the team would do well.
“Things are looking very good for our boxers. If the three boxers win on Wednesday, then every boxer will come home with a medal,” he told Namibia Sport.
Moses however didn’t want to get carried away.
“For now I don’t have much to say because we are focusing on the medals and we want to qualify the whole team and show the whole world the quality of Namibia’s boxers,” he said.
