Athletics Tanzania’s graduation to modern time recording gadgets during high-profile championships, discarding wristwatches, which have been used in the past 50 years or so, is a milestone in our sports development.
This should ease the management of individual athletes, as their timings can be recognised by the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF). For years, top athletics nations and some leading local runners have been turning down invitations by the national athletics body to compete in various local championships over the lack of recording devices.
The installation of the timers at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam should, among other things, enhance the reputation of our national amateur athletics championships, and attract top athletes to use our facilities for build-ups to international competitions.
The gadgets were used at the venue from the very first time during this year’s national championship last week.
The stadium is also fully equipped with all other important amenities for almost all the sports disciplines. Athletics Tanzania should make full use of this magnificent stadium to help turn around the county’s fortunes on the track.
