Reports reaching Adom News indicates that the former chairman of Asante Kotoko football club, Herbert Mensah has been detained by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) at their Kanda office in Accra.
According to the reports, Mr. Mensah voluntarily walked into the headquarters of the BNI on Monday apparently to clear concerns raised about the whereabouts of the most wanted GHS 90 million tape on which it is alleged that President Mills sanctioned his campaign team to use GHC 90 million for his flagbearship bid of the NDC.
Reports say on reaching the BNI head quarters, Mr. Herbert Mensah was questioned for a few minutes and directed to the BNI office in Kanda where after filling a report he was asked to produce the tape.
Mr. Mensah is said to have told the BNI officers that the said tape is in the possession of the former president. He was then detained.
Sources say, a few minutes ago, Mr. Mensah was asked to contact someone to sign a bail for him before being released.
Tension is said to be mounting at the BNI offices as lawyers for Mr. Mensah are said to be on their way to the office.
On Tuesday May 10, Herbert Mensah, a strong supporter of the Rawlingses, alleged that he and former President Jerry Rawlings had discovered from security tapes they got from the Castle that President Mills’ campaign team planned to use about GHS90 million to fuel his campaign for flag bearer of the NDC.
He was however not willing to go into details on the matter such as where the funds will be coming from, stating that at the appropriate time, they will come out with the full details but on Friday, Mr. Herbert promised the morning show team of Adom FM that he would give them the opportunity to listen to nine minutes of the two-hour tape.
Although that meeting did not come off, the Daily Guide newspaper was reportedly able to listen to that tape.
According to the host of Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Adakabre Frimpong Manso, his team could not receive the tape because his proposal to turn the tape over to national security did not go down well with Herbert Mensah’s camp.
The Editor of Daily Guide, Fortune Alimi, who spoke to Adom News, said their reporter listened to the tape but the amount was GHS 90,000 that is 900 billion old cedis.
