Arsenal striker Robin van Persie says that many things have transpired to ruin a season that appeared to be going swimmingly in February and has left the Gunners trophyless for the sixth successive campaign.

A 2-1 home defeat by Aston Villa was the latest in a string of failures for the Gunners this season and Van Persie, who added a late consolation to take his goal tally to 21 for the season, believes that his side must show more consistency if they are to challenge for honours next season.

Furthermore, FA Cup winners Manchester City now have a real chance of overtaking the Gunners and snatching third spot, and with it an automatic Champions League place.

“There were lots of things which went wrong – we were not consistent enough. It is difficult to talk about it now,” Van Persie told Arsenal TV Online.

“It is going to be difficult to finish third, but we still have one game and have to win that to at least give us a chance.

“Next season we have to try to come back stronger. Everyone starts from scratch and we have a chance, it is up to us to prove it.”

At the end of yesterday’s match, many Arsenal fans vented their frustrations with the side – and the board after the authorisation of a 6 per cent ticket price rise – for failing to deliver a trophy once again, and the Dutchman accepts that the supporters have their right to let the players know about their disappointment.

Van Persie added: “The supporters have been great, every single game they have been supporting us tremendously and I am really proud to be a Gunner with them as our fans.”
