Nairobi — Footballer-turned-athlete Wellington Nyakundi continued his brilliant performance on Saturday, clocking 22.8 seconds to win the 200 metres as the National Bank of Kenya-sponsored fifth weekend athletics meeting wound up at Shanzu Teachers College, Mombasa.
Nyakundi, a former striker with Nationwide League sides Jomvu Super Stars and Administration Police who is now a prisons officer, also helped his Kenya Prisons team to to come tops in the 4x400m relay after finishing third in the 100m in 11.3.
“I am enjoying athletics and I want to make sure I make the All Africa Games team in the 200m and 100m before switching to the 400m race next year,” said the 31-year-old sprinter, who represented Kenya in the relays at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India, last year.
Clean sweep for Kenya Police
Nyakundi was closely followed by colleague Stephen Barasa (23.0) while Boniface Kangai (23.1) of Moi Air Base was third.
It was a clean sweep for Kenya Police in the 4x100m women’s relay, won by Joy Zackary, who is making a strong comeback after a two-year layoff.
Zackary clocked 25.6, ahead of Millicent Ndoro (26.3) and Maryline Chelangat (26.6).
World and Olympic 800m champion Pamela Jelimo found the going tough in the 400m, finishing third in 57.2 behind the winner, Ugandan Agnes Aneno, who clocked 56.4 and Posta’s Grace Kidaki (56.7).
The men’s 400m was won by Moses Keritich (48.4), followed by Kennedy Chepsiror (48.7) and Gilbert Ngeno (49.0).
Completed her double
Zackary (12.6) completed her double with a 100m victory ahead of Millicent Ndoro (12.8) and Maryline Chelagat (13.0).
Prisons’ Collins Mulaa (10.9) won the men’s 100m, followed by Simon Kimaru (11.1) of GSU and Wellington Nyakundi (11.3).
In women’s shot put, Jackline Nyongesa of Prisons won with an 11.95 metres throw, beating Roseline Rakamba (10.97m) of Laikipia Air Base and Caroline Cherop (10.9) of GSU.
The top five finishers were awarded with cash and T-shirts by the sponsors.
