After throwng away a two goal lead at Wigan, West Ham have ended their six year stint in the Premier League.

The Hammers were relegated after failing to pick up the win they needed at the DW Stadium and stay in touch with the relegation pack. Wigan, though, have given themselves a huge boost in the fight for survival with the win; drawing level on 39 points with 17th place Blackpool and Birmingham just one place about them.

The Latics face Stoke on the Premier League’s final round of games next Sunday, while Blackpool face the unenviable task of going to Old Trafford looking for a win.

It all looked rosey for West Ham after Demba Ba’s early brace gave them a 2-0 lead, but goals from Charles N’Zogbia and Conor Sammon turned the game around for the home side and left the Hammers facing the cruel realisation they were heading down.

It marks a return to England’s second tier for the first time since 2005 when West Ham were promoted after beating Preston 1-0 in the play-off final, having lost to the unfancied Crystal Palace a year previously.

After losing their bid to take over the Olympic Stadium in Stratford in 2012 it marks an end to a disappointing season for West Ham and casts serious doubt over the future of manager Avram Grant.
