Newcastle United are believed to have raced past rivals Sunderland in the race to sign Wigan Athletic winger Charles N’Zogbia.

The 24-year-old’s performances for the relegation-threatened club have seen him being linked with a move away from the DW Stadium, with both north-east teams reported to be interested in him.

N’Zogbia left the Tyneside club only two years ago after a feud with then boss Joe Kinnear. But the News of the World reports that Newcastle still feel they are in the best placed position to sign the winger, who they are believed to be putting together a £6 million move for.

Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City have also been linked with moves for N’Zogbia.
