Roberto Mancini has fired a warning shot to newly crowned champions Manchester United, insisting that Manchester City want to win the Premier League next season.

The Eastlands club won the FA Cup on Saturday after beating Stoke 1-0 in the final, ending a 35-year trophy drought.

But on the same day, the club’s arch-rivals managed to draw with Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park to win a record 19th league title.

Now the Italian boss envisions City winning the league, saying: “This season it was important to start to win. In one week, we have got into the Champions League, which was our first target, and we have now won the FA Cup. So we have two very satisfying achievements in five days.

“But next season we want to try and win the title. Why not? This year, we were very close to both United and Chelsea and next year we will improve.

“And once you have a winning mentality, it helps, it becomes easier.”

The former Inter boss was also adamant that the club’s FA Cup success was not overshadowed by United winning the league title.

“No, absolutely not,” he said.

“There are three competitions. We won the FA Cup and it’s a very important trophy.”

He added: “I also think all the people in Manchester are happy.”
