Peace Critical to Development – Comesa Chief

COMMON Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) secretary general Sindiso Ngwenya has said there can be no meaningful development in the region and the world at large without peace, security and stability.

Speaking when he received credentials from Eritrean Ambassador to Kenya, Beyene Russom as COMESA permanent representative at the secretariat in Lusaka yesterday, Mr Ngwenya said the countries ravaged by conflicts had not fully realised their potential because of destroyed infrastructure.

Mr Ngwenya expressed confidence that Mr Russom’s appointment would contribute to the enhancement of Eritrea’s participation in COMESA activities and its regional integration agenda.

He was convinced that COMESA would benefit from Mr Russom’s insight and experience, adding that he was confident Eritrea would by the end of the year join the Free Trade Area in ensuring the region became a single market.

“Eritrea also fully recognises COMESA Laissez Passer and Agreement on Privileges, therefore, facilitating the implementation of COMESA programmes and activities in Eritrean territory.

“Your Excellency, I am confident that your new mandate will contribute to the enhancement of Eritrea’s participation in COMESA activities and regional integration agenda and I promise you support in this noble calling,” Mr Ngwenya said.

After presenting his credentials, Mr Russom said he was grateful and honoured for his appointment and pledged to work hard to represent his country and to promote cooperation and peace among neighbouring countries.
