Windhoek — Malawi were crowned champions of the 2011 edition of the annual Confederation of Southern African Netball Associations (COSANA) Games, which were concluded in Windhoek yesterday.
Going into the final day of the five-day youth tourney, Malawi was the only unbeaten team in the four-nation competition.
The continental champions were pitted against South Africa to determine first place despite having beaten South Africa thoroughly in their two legged encounters on Namibian soil.
If there were any lingering doubts about the genuine champions, Malawi quickly erased them as they convincingly despatched South Africa by 36 goals to 26 in the final.
And to cap their near faultless performance, Malawi dominated all facets of the game and were in total command in all four quarters with goal shooter Joyce Mvula ably assisted by goal attacker Thandise Galeta causing the damage. To put the cherry on top, Malawi scored a remarkable tally of 326 goals while conceding 186 in the process in just seven hours of action. The tournament ended on a sour note as Malawi returned home without the precious trophy following South Africa’s failure to bring the trophy to Namibia, which they won last year in Lesotho.
“That’s malicious, why do we have to suffer at the hands of South Africa every time. This is not the first time – we endured the same shoddy treatment when our senior team won the COSANA Championship in Durban last year,” charged a furious Malawi coach Conis Mhone.
