Ashley Young has dropped his biggest hint yet that he will leave Aston Villa at the end of the season, by stating that he has set himself lofty career goals.

The 25-year-old winger has just one year left on his contract and speculation has mounted that Liverpool and Manchester United will make a move for the England international in the summer.

“I’m an ambitious person who wants to win titles and leagues and cups and stuff. Hopefully, fingers crossed, I can do that,” he told the Birmingham Mail.

“I think they say that players start to peak at 26 or 27 and I’m soon to be 26 so fingers crossed I can start peaking myself.

“I’ve been enjoying how things have been going for me.”

Young has been one of the successes of the season for the Villains, who have struggled under the leadership of Gerard Houllier.

Villa have fallen from sixth place last term and have only recently secured their Premier League status for another season, but Young has aided their cause with eight goals and nine assists.

The winger impressed during five appearances for the national side this campaign, which has led to the increasing speculation about his future and forced assistant manager Gary McAllister to concede that he could leave at the end of the season.

And Young did little to quieten the speculation, as he focused on continuing his good form.
He added: Obviously, I want to be able to do well myself, do well for the club and get them higher than we are at the moment.

“Fingers crossed I can continue not to be injured, keep going, keep doing what I’ve been doing and see it right through to the end of the season.”
