Dewein District Commissioner, Foley Siryon, says some unnamed citizens in the district were in the habit of undermining and thwarting government’s efforts to implement a logging concessionary agreement that is worth millions of US dollars and that promises enormous benefits to residents.

According to Commissioner Siryon, the B & V Timber Company recently entered into a contractual agreement with the government, which took into consideration the interest of the citizens, but that some individuals in the district were undermining its implementation.

He said the individuals, whom he described as “handful”, were, without giving concrete reasons for their fear, contending that the contract would not meet the needs of the people of the district.

He said the investment project was an opportunity that the people of the district could not afford to lose because of petty jealousy and the selfishness.

Mr. Siryon pointed accusing fingers to some Monrovia-based Dewein District citizens, who he said, were at the forefront of the negative campaign against the implementation of the concessionary agreement.

Upon the resumption of operations, he quoted the contract as guaranteeing, B & V will construct a sawmill and a processing plant that would create between 500 and 1000 jobs. This, he said, would greatly reduce the economic hardship in the district and other areas in Bomi County.

The Dewein District Commissioner indicated that apart from this agreement, the B &V Timber Company, which is Liberian-own, would rehabilitate roads, government facilities, and help with the construction of some major farm-to-market roads to make the entire district accessible to other districts in the county.

Mr. Siryon urged all citizens of the district, especially those residing in Monrovia, to support his administration’s efforts aimed at spurring growth and development in the district.
