JD on…Winning streak

Even Usain Bolt would have difficulty catching me right now as I’m on a golden run. The football markets have come up trumps with 13 from 15 bets deployed last week all coming off and the momentum has carried into this week with three winners on Tuesday.

Levante delivered a kick in the teeth by nicking a point against Barcelona on Wednesday night. I’d backed the Blaugrana in a double with Real Betis and was convinced the bet would pay off easily. Suffice to say I won’t be sending Gerard Pique or Victor Valdes a Christmas card as their defensive mix-up spoiled my profit.

Thanks to Roma I managed to break even, as they scored a late goal against AC Milan. We all go through these golden streaks where everything we touch seems to come off. I am too long at this game to think it will last forever. In truth, 2011 has been extremely volatile and well below my usual expectations and form but I can feel the market turning in my favour.

Sir Alex Ferguson is a giant of a man. When Manchester United secure the point they need to win the Premier League it will be 12 titles for Fergie and 19 for the Red Devils. He’s well and truly knocked Liverpool off their perch by turning his club into the most successful in the English game.

He is a man who will be 70 this year but his drive, passion and will to win is a force of nature. There are some bookmakers who have a market on the next permanent Manchester United boss, with Jose Mourinho the leading contender at 3/1, followed by Pep Guardiola at 4/1 and David Moyes at 6/1.

Punters could be waiting a while to pick up their dosh as I can’t see this man going anywhere. Since I’ve been following football Sir Alex has always been the manager of Manchester United and it is hard to envisage anyone else in the hot seat at Old Trafford.

It is the time of year to focus on goals if you want to make some money. Last weekend every Premier League team scored at least one goal in their match so those that backed ‘both teams to score’ would have been sitting pretty. If you’d backed both teams to score in every single game in an accumulator you’d be laughing all the way to the bank.

Results can be a bit on the unpredictable side at this time of the year as you see teams that have struggled all season battling to stay up and playing above themselves, getting better results than usual – unless you are West Ham United. Your betting strategy must allow for that and a stronger emphasis on the goals market (over 2.5 mainly) can pay dividends. You will find that teams that have little to play for are more relaxed and free-flowing, which is a scenario that tends to produce goals.

England’s lower leagues will occupy our attention for the next few weeks as the play-offs take place. There is so much at stake for these teams as their long hard season is so close to the ultimate reward of getting promoted to a higher division.

As a schoolboy I’d often be ‘under the weather’ on play-off final day as it was a game you simply couldn’t miss. Goals were pretty much a given and on some occasions it would provide contenders for game of the season.

Just like with betting I would formulate a strategy for how I could avoid school and watch the match. Hopefully my mother isn’t reading this. Of course, you should always go to school and my schoolboy truancy is not to be recommended.

From a betting perspective you have to be careful with the play-offs as the team that finished highest and just missed out on automatic promotion can often come into the games in a deflated mood. The team that finished sixth can often be the team that are simply delighted to get into a play-off position and are on a high.
