Gambia have confirmed its withdrawal from the West Africa Football Union Cup currently ongoing in Nigeria, Foroyaa Sports can reveal.
The Scorpions won’t be participating in the eight-team tournament due to air ticket problems, Gambia Football Association’s Abdou Salam Jammeh confirmed to this news outlet yesterday.
The Gambian side will not be able to get their ticket on time and with the tournament already kicking off in Abeokuta Nigeria, the local-based Scorpions decided to pull out.
“Yes Gambia is not going to participate in the tournament because of ticket problems. And we cannot go to Nigeria through land or something because the tournament has already started” he told this paper.
“I am told by Seedy Kinteh president of GFA yesterday that we will not be participating in the tournament so that is what I can say.” Lamin Sarr coach of the Gambian side said.
Gambia group peers Senegal have also backed out of the championship with Mali.
Gambia’s withdrawal has left group B with two teams-Ghana and Togo.
