Swapo Commemorates 51 Years of Existence

A handful of Swapo Party supporters gathered at Okuryangava in the Khomas region to commemorate the 51st anniversary of the Swapo Party.

The decision to commemorate the party’s anniversary on May Day this year by the party leadership, and was observed with affiliated trade union membership of, notably, the National Workers Union of Namibia (NUNW).

The meeting in the Tobias Hainyeko district observed a minute of silence for all who lost their lives in the liberation struggle.

Keynote speaker, mayor of the City of Windhoek, Elaine Trepper, gave a historic overview of the colonial and apartheid period, and the war of liberation.

“Swapo has stood at the centre and influenced the course of the outcome in the history of modern nationalism,” said Trepper.

She said the Swapo Party led government is in the process of providing jobs, housing, and sanitation while most of the land is remain in the hands of a few.

Speaking at the same event, NUNW liaison officer Moses Shiikwa, said education and training must become a priority for the nation, and in particular the youth, to take up positions.

“If we are not careful, this country will be overtaken by foreigners because we do not have enough expertise,” warned Shiikwa, who is also a commissioner on the Employment Equity Commission.

He said the rights of future workers should be protected, and urged the young to become entrepreneurs instead of job seekers.
