THE Minister of Youth, National Service, Sports and Culture Kazenambo Kazenambo made a serious plea to the local corporate sector to get involved in the development of sport in the country on Sunday.
Speaking at the official opening of the Confederation of Southern African Netball Associations’ (COSANA) Under-21 championship hosted by Namibia in Windhoek, he said the private sector has an important role to play at regional and continental levels in ensuring that sports development receives maximum support.
“The players and their parents contribute to the corporate world by buying their products, and now it is time for the private sector to also contribute,” stressed Kazenambo.
He called on the participating countries, namely Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Malawi to promote sportsmanship and the spirit of sisterhood by expanding it beyond regional borders.
At the same event, the Director of Sport, Dr Vetumbuavi Veii called on the Zone Six nations to stop fighting amongst themselves over personal and petty issues.
“You know that the Franco-African countries have no interest in putting our problems on their programmes, and we as Zone Six must stand together to have our voices heard. Stop the in-fighting, and concentrate on the upcoming All Africa Games in September” he noted.
Veii, who is also the chairperson of the Supreme Council for Sports in Africa (SCSA) Zone Six, said the Zone has an important role to play, and thus called on southern Africa to put their egos aside or “simply put it in the rubbish bin with a proper seal on”.
The under-21 netball competition will end on Thursday.
