NDC must strip Rawlings of ‘Founder’ title – Bature

The former President, Jerry John Rawlings, has lost the moral right to remain founder of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) after declaring support for his wife to contest President Mills for the party’s flagbearer position, a staunch member of the party has declared.

Iddrisu Bature Iddrisu, Editor of the Al-Hajj Newspaper, told Citi News the former President’s status as the founder of the ruling NDC would eventually become a “joke” if he does not voluntarily give up that status after he chose to support his wife against the incumbent President.

“What in the end would happen is that, that position would become a mockery because he (Rawlings) is going to go round the country to campaign for his wife. So where would that founder’s position be, it is lost. Now look at the airwaves, he is not competing in the NDC impending primaries but virtually 75% of criticisms and attacks are directed towards him because he has descended into the arena of that kind of politicking.

“He has lost that moral right of calling himself a founder unless he decides to abandon that position of defending his wife and denouncing other candidates.

“If you are the founder of the party and you are also Chairman of the Council of Elders and you come public not only to endorse and support your wife but to also campaign against her competitor then clearly you have lost all moral authority to that position of a father figure”.

Alhaji Bature, a former close friend of the former President, expressed amazement that the party has watched seemingly unconcerned as Mr Rawlings denigrates his status as Founder of the party.

According to him, the party must hold a conference to initiate moves to strip Mr Rawlings of the title.
